What Is a Medical Termination of Pregnancy?
A medical termination of pregnancy, also known as a medical abortion, involves taking prescribed medication to end an early pregnancy. The process uses two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol, which work together to stop the pregnancy from progressing and help the uterus expel the pregnancy tissue. Medical termination is different from surgical termination, as it does not involve a surgical procedure.
Am I Eligible?
Medical termination may be suitable for people in the early stages of pregnancy. Eligibility depends on several factors, including:
- How many weeks pregnant you are
- Your medical history and current medications
- Confirmation of the pregnancy’s location and gestation
- Any medical conditions that may affect treatment suitability
- Your ability to access appropriate support and emergency medical care if required

Follow-up care is an important part of the process to confirm that the termination has been completed and to address any ongoing concerns. Your GP can also discuss contraception and future reproductive health needs.
